Sand is not a universal coop or run recommendation. First name the location, structural floor, incoming water and removal routine. Current Extension sources used here support dry, cleanable housing and named bedding choices; they do not establish one universally suitable construction or play sand.

Moisture and waste behave differently in each context. A material that stays manageable under a roof can fail on saturated ground.

Floor distinctions
OSU names concrete slab and solid wood as secure floor examples. A ground-based run is a different enclosure and drainage category.
Check seams, trapped moisture, loaded removal and product compatibility. A dry top does not prove the wood below is dry.
Check cracks, drainage direction, dust and the cleaning route. Do not assume every slab should be hosed.
Treat drainage, digging edges and contamination as site questions. A layer over saturated ground does not resolve incoming water.
Dust, moisture and maintenance
Stop and reassess if dust clouds, persistent wet areas, odor, difficult waste removal or an obscured enclosure edge becomes normal.
Trace leaks, spills, roof discharge and ground water before changing the surface.
Observe dust during walking and waste removal; do not dry-sweep into occupied air.
Record how contaminated material will be removed, stored and disposed of.
Keep a named product and supplier specification separate from the generic word sand.
Recheck the floor edge, threshold, latches and ground boundary after every reset.
Evidence boundary
OSU supports secure-floor, drainage and maintenance relationships. Penn State names pine shavings or straw and calls for wet or compacted litter removal. Neither source supports a universal construction-sand or play-sand recommendation.
