Coop Wood & Panels: Specify the Job Before Buying

Start with the part the wood will become: a frame member, a structural panel or a removable lining. Record its position, exposure and drawing reference before comparing prices. A smooth face, a familiar thickness or a label such as “outdoor plywood” does not answer all three jobs. Match the specified grade and actual dimensions to the selected assembly, then check how the required pieces fit the available stock. Keep structural sizing and unidentified reclaimed material unresolved until there is a documented basis for using them.

Start with your situation

You have a specified drawing
Copy the member or panel reference and revision. Compare the offered stock against every specified attribute before counting it.
You have only a reference layout
Measure the spaces and record the intended jobs. Ask for the missing framing and panel details before converting dimensions into a purchase list.
You want to reuse leftover material
Keep its identity, condition and proposed use together. An unknown grade or treatment stays an open question; appearance alone does not resolve it.

What to leave withA separate quote line for each wood or panel specification, backed by a cutting layout and a list of unresolved details.

Specify what the material has to do

Keep three lists: framing members, structural panels and service surfaces. For framing, record species or species group, grade, nominal description, actual section and available length. For panels, retain the product stamp, performance category or thickness, intended application and bond classification. For a removable liner, add how its edges, fixing and full removal will work. A liner does not establish the adequacy of the floor beneath it.

APA distinguishes Exposure 1 panels, intended for construction moisture or similarly limited exposure, from Exterior panels intended for long-term weather exposure. “CDX” is commonly Exposure 1. A bond classification does not settle the whole wall or floor design. Record where water can reach faces, edges and joints, then obtain the selected product’s installation and protection details.

Price comparable scopes. A lower sheet price is not a saving if its size prevents the required cuts. Ask the supplier to quote the exact grade and dimensions, with delivery and any cutting charge separately. If a substitute changes thickness or actual section, return it to the drawing review before changing the order.

Three jobs that need different order lines
Material jobSpecify before pricingWhat still needs resolution

Structural panelApplication, stamp, thickness/performance category, bond class and sheet size.Support layout, panel orientation, joints and attachment must match the assembly.
Removable service surfaceFinished size, edge treatment, product cleaning instructions and fixing/removal method.Check the complete lift-out route and the condition of the supporting floor.

From the drawing to a checkable quote

  1. Locate each piece

Mark the part on a current drawing. Separate sheltered surfaces, exposed edges and any specified ground-contact use.

Ready to continue when: Every quote line has a location and a drawing revision, or is explicitly marked Pending details.

  2. Read the offered specification

Ask for the actual product label and dimensions. For treated material, retain the treatment documentation and pass it to the connector selection.

Ready to continue when: The product identity resolves the requested attributes; “equivalent” without supporting detail is not accepted as a match.

  3. Lay out cuts on available stock

Draw the required blanks on each stock size. Preserve required orientation and include the chosen cutting process and edge allowances before finalizing counts.

Ready to continue when: Every required piece is assigned once; offcuts are reused only where their dimensions and specification fit.

  4. Prepare the receipt check

Retain the accepted quote with the drawing and mark which supplied pieces serve which parts. Record any substitution before cutting.

Ready to continue when: Labels, actual sizes and visible condition agree with the order; damaged or unidentified items remain separate for resolution.

Enough area, but the blanks do not fit

Illustrative planning exercise · not a reported build or product specification

Illustrative cutting exercise: two required rectangular blanks are each 60 × 30 in. The candidate sheet is 96 × 48 in. These are invented dimensions, not parts from a published coop design.

  1. Area gives only a lower bound

Two blanks occupy 3,600 sq in, or 25 sq ft. One sheet has 32 sq ft, so area alone appears sufficient.

  2. Check both directions

Two 60 in lengths need 120 in if placed end to end; two 30 in widths need 60 in side by side. Neither fits this sheet. Turning a blank puts its 60 in side across a 48 in width.

  3. Separate the exercise from the order

At least two sheets are needed for these rectangles. Confirm orientation, cutting allowances and any other assigned parts before turning this lower bound into a real sheet count.

Decision and record: Record “two sheets minimum in this illustrative layout,” attach the sketch and leave the actual purchase quantity blank until the project cutting layout and specification are reviewed.

When the materials arrive

  • Photograph the stamp or end label before it is lost during cutting; associate it with the order line.
  • Compare actual section, thickness and sheet dimensions with the accepted specification.
  • Set aside unexpected substitutions or visibly damaged pieces and record what must be resolved before use.

Keep a record you can use for the quote

Record your actual project details below. The worked example is an illustration; it does not supply your order quantities.

Part and drawing revision
Record the actual part, location and current revision.
Product and exposure
Copy grade/stamp, actual dimensions and applicable treatment or bond classification.
Cutting basis and unit
Attach the checked stock layout; distinguish pieces, sheets and linear length.
Quantity and open decision
Leave actual quantity blank until resolved; name who will close the missing detail.

Sources and scope

Revised 2026-10-12 · Material note v1.0.0. Sources checked on 2026-10-12. The quote workflow and numerical examples are editorial planning aids. The cited sources support the stated product principles; they do not approve a coop design.

Member sizing, foundations, anchoring and site loads need their own resolved design details. The five reference designs remain preparation references; the Walk-In retains its separate construction baseline and open project decisions.
