Chicken Coop Sizes by Flock Size
Start with the flock, then compare the indoor condition, outdoor access, human care path and layout. A chicken count is a useful starting point—not a universal capacity promise.

Outdoor access changes the indoor starting point.
Oregon State Extension gives 3 sq ft per bird with outdoor access, or 8–10 sq ft without it. These totals are arithmetic for the stated condition, not Plan capacities; the detail pages also show Penn State’s separate laying-hen context.

Run area is separate. A roofed run is not automatically enclosed indoor space. Flock size does not dictate compact, walk-in or mobile construction.
